To use technologies successfully in a classroom, there's a lot to know. You don't need to know it all, but certain skills and knolwedge serve as prerequisites for any technology use. Our "Technology Knowledge and Skills Self-Assessment" allows you to conduct an inventory of what you know and don't know, and what you can and can't do. Then, based on these assessments, you can determine what you'll need to learn to use technologies in a particular way.

There are two ways to interact with our self-assessment tool. You can access the self-assessment directly, and assess any or all of the prerequisites identified, or you can use sections of the technology self-assessment in conjunction with the "Goal / Strategy Selection Guide," which will ask you to assess your knolwedge and skills related only to the prerequisites for the strategies you have targeted. In either case, the process is basically the same.

First, you'll select a category from a list of general prerequisites like the one shown below. (When you access the self-assessment directly, you'll get this long list, but when you get to the self assessment from the GSSG you'll see a much shorter list.)

The first list shows you the names of the prerequisite categories (like "Word Processing (Basic)") and a status code. A code of "C" stands for complete, which means that all of the knolwedge and skills in the category are complete. A code of "I" stands for Intermediate, and is presented when you know more than half, but not all of the prerequisites in the category. "N" stands for "Novice," indicating that you have indicated that you have completed less than half of the prerequisites. "N/A" stands for "Not Assessed," meaning that you have not yet completed the assessment for that section. (As you can see, "Phil" has only assessed the first few categories.)

When you click on the name of a category, a new page appears, presenting you with a list of the prerequisites in that category and a set of buttons you can use to represent your accomplishments. (See illustration below.)

You don't need to complete the whole assessment in one session. Your data will be saved. In the near future, the data you enter inthis self-assessment will be used to help you select technology strategies in the Goal / Strategy Investigator and to identify professional development needs when using the "Action Plan Builder."

Because the self-assessment stores data for your use, we need to know who you are, so this tool is only available to registered users after they log in.
